Hosts Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 187 runs in the first Test in Galle on Thursday. Chasing a target of 348, the West Indies team was reduced to 160 runs before tea on the final day. Sri Lanka took a 156-run lead in the first innings to hand the visitors a resounding 348-run victory at the Galle International Stadium. At 52 for six at the end of day four, West Indies held on in the first session but fell after lunch. Lasith Embuldeniya took five wickets while Ramesh Mendis completed him by four wickets.
Nkrumah Bonner was unbeaten on 68 for the tourists – one of only three West Indies batsmen to make it to double digits in their second innings, the others being Joshua da Silva, who scored 54 and Rahkim Cornwall with 13.
The second Test also starts in Galle from Monday.
