The decision of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government to repeal three agriculture laws was welcomed by various cine personalities including actors Sonu Sood, Urmila Matondkar, Taapsee Pannu and Richa Chadha.

Thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and UP, who have been protesting for over a year, are demanding the Farmer Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Prices. were demanding withdrawal. Enacted in September last year, the three agriculture laws have been heralded as major reforms in the agriculture sector by the central government that will remove middlemen and allow farmers to sell anywhere in the country.

On the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, PM Modi said that three agricultural laws will be repealed in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.

Addressing the nation, he said, “Today I want to tell everyone that we have decided to repeal all three agricultural laws.”

Soon after the announcement, various film personalities took to social media to express their happiness over the government’s decision and praised the perseverance of the farmers.

Mr Sood termed the news as wonderful and thanked not only PM Modi but also the farmers for holding peaceful protests.

Sharing a picture of farmers, actor-politician Ms Matondkar expressed happiness over the decision.

“Victory needs passion, which needs boiling blood, this sky will also come to the surface, all it needs is intentions, that echo of victory. Kisanandolaan Zindabad. Best wishes to my farmer brothers and sisters. Salute to the martyr farmers always # Jaikisan always,” he wrote.

Ms Chadha, 34, posted a picture of herself wearing a T-shirt that has a farmer on it and said it would be her day’s outfit.

“Sarbat Da Bhala! #OOTD,” she said.

Ms Pannu shared a news clip which said, ‘PM says 3 agricultural laws should be withdrawn’ and its caption read: “Also….. Gurpurab diyan sab nu vadhaiyaan.”

Actress Gul Panag says it is a lesson for future governments to engage with all stakeholders while bringing about reforms.

“I wish we didn’t have to let the standoff last so long that would have cost so many lives. And defame, defame, illegalize Farm Protest & Protesters. #Farmlawsrepealed,” she wrote.

He also expressed displeasure over the farmers being called goons, anti-nationals and terrorists and said that it will not be forgotten and forgiven.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta said it is time to celebrate the determination and perseverance of farmers.

Actor Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub expressed his happiness on social media while congratulating the farmers.

Filmmaker Onir welcomed the decision but also said that all those who lost their lives amid the protests should not be forgotten.

He said, “Jai Ho Kisan Andolan. Farmers’ protest. That’s what I have heard for a long time. But don’t forget all the people lost in this long fight.”

However, actress Kangana Ranaut had a different perspective.

In his Instagram stories, the actor expressed his displeasure over the government’s decision to repeal three agricultural laws.

“Sad, shameful and absolutely inappropriate,” she said.

He wrote in response to a social media user, “If people on the street have started making laws and not the government elected in Parliament then it is also a jihadi nation… Congratulations to all who want this. ” who appreciated the move.

The protesting farmers had expressed apprehension that the new laws would pave the way for removing the security cover of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and leaving the market system at the mercy of big corporates.
