Rebel Congress MLA Aditi Singh joins BJP ahead of UP elections

Aditi Singh is an MLA from Rae Bareli Sardar Vidhan Sabha constituency of the state.

Rebel UP Congress leader Aditi Singh – MLA from the state’s Rae Bareli Sadar assembly constituency – has joined the ruling BJP in Lucknow.

Rae Bareli is a Congress stronghold – Congress President Sonia Gandhi is a Lok Sabha MP from here – and it has voted for the party in every Lok Sabha election since 1980 (exceptions were in 1996 and 1998, when BJP’s Ashok Singh was elected).

Ms. Singh’s father, Akhilesh Singh, a five-time MLA from the seat, was very close to the Gandhi family, and was regularly photographed whenever Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited Rae Bareli.

Aditi Singh fell out with the Congress in 2019, when she met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, but has not formally severed ties with the party so far.

The Congress had petitioned the UP Assembly Speaker to disqualify Ms Singh for her anti-party activities, but it did not happen.

Ms Singh’s switch comes months ahead of elections in the politically crucial state, with the BJP bidding for re-election in protest against skyrocketing prices of essential commodities along with massive protests by farmers against agricultural laws. such as fuel and vegetables.

A frequent outspoken critic of the Congress and its leadership, Aditi Singh last week slammed senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for questioning the controversial agriculture laws.

“Priyanka Gandhi had a problem when the bills were brought. When laws are repealed she has a problem. What does she want? She should say it clearly. She is only politicizing the matter. Now her The pass is out of issues to politicize,” Aditi Singh was quoted by news agency ANI.

As far as Lakhimpur (where farmers were allegedly crushed by a convoy run by the son of a Union minister) and other issues are concerned, Priyanka Gandhi always politicized it, he said. CBI investigation is going on in Lakhimpur incident. The Supreme Court is taking cognizance. If she doesn’t trust institutions, I can’t understand who she trusts?” he continued.

The ruling party will hope that the induction of Aditi Singh will help turn the Congress stronghold, which will be a very important outcome, if it happens.
