A broken mother from Kashmir today received the Shaurya Chakra, the country’s third highest gallantry award, from her son, who was martyred in the line of duty in an anti-terrorist operation in 2019.

A video shared by news agency ANI shows Sara Begum, the mother of Jammu and Kashmir Special Police Officer Bilal Ahmed Magrey, struggling to hold back her tears as voiceover explains how her son participated in the security operation. Despite being seriously injured, civilians were evacuated and terrorists included. ,

The moving clip also shows the elderly woman being gently patted on her back by security personnel as Sadh fights with pride.

After receiving the award from President Ram Nath Kovind, Sara Begum turned to greet the senior ministers seated behind her. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, apparently struck by an emotionally charged moment, is seen comforting the elderly woman before walking away with her son’s glory in her hand.

The citation for the award stated that an operation was launched by the security forces following an input about the presence of terrorists in a house in Baramulla.

“Mr. Bilal Ahmed Magrey involved himself in the Room Intervention Operational Party and thus to evacuate the trapped civilians from the targeted house and neutralize the terrorist. When the SPO Bilal Ahmed was evacuating the civilians, the hiding terrorists threw several grenades and fired shots at him and his operational associates indiscriminately, resulting in serious injuries to him and party commander SI Shri Amar Deep and a civilian Sonu Lal.”

Despite being seriously injured, Mr Magrey “showed indomitable courage and pulled out injured civilians and other civilians”, it added.

The citation stated that the police officer continued to fire till he lost consciousness due to excessive bleeding.
