After deciding to bowl against New Zealand, Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave India their first breakthrough by dismissing Daryl Mitchell in the first over of the match. However, Mark Chapman is going steady with Martin Guptill against the Indian bowlers after the fall of the first wicket. Earlier, Venkatesh Iyer made his T20I debut for India while Shreyas Iyer, Mohammad Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Axar Patel and Deepak Chahar came back into the playing XI. New Zealand made four changes to their squad that played the T20 World Cup final last Sunday – Mark Chapman, Todd Astle and Lockie Ferguson returned to the XI. India failed to qualify for the last four in the recently concluded T20 World Cup, where New Zealand finished runners-up after an eight-wicket loss to Australia in the final. The marquee tournament was Virat Kohli’s last as T20I captain and the last assignment for former head coach Ravi Shastri. New Zealand, on the other hand, are without their regular skipper Kane Williamson who will directly feature in the Test squad after the conclusion of the T20Is. In Williamson’s absence, Tim Southee has been named as the stand-in captain for the first T20I. (live scorecard)
