Kochi-based tea stall owner KR Vijayan, whose travels around the world with his wife brought him worldwide fame, died of a heart attack on Friday, family sources said. He was 71 years old.
Vijayan and his wife Mohana owned a modest tea shop “Shri Balaji Coffee House” in Kochi and became famous after their earnings funded their world tours.
The couple recently returned from a family tour of Russia.
The two saved Rs 300 a day from their tea stall earnings and traveled to Israel in 2007, their first outside the country. The couple had traveled to 26 countries in the last 14 years. They also took small loans for travel.
As news of the couple traveling around the world went viral, they started getting sponsors like industrialist Anand Mahindra, who sponsored their trip to Australia in 2019 after learning about them from social media.
His last visit to Russia was on 21 October and he returned on 28 October.
His last visit before traveling to Russia was in November-December 2019, due to the lockdown induced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
