After the much-awaited Kabir Singh in 2019, Shahid Kapoor will soon be back on screen with Jersey. A remake of the National Award winning Telugu film of the same name, Shahid will play the role of Arjun, a failed cricketer who decides to fulfill his dream of representing Team India for his son. On Tuesday, the makers dropped the trailer, and we can say that it is a remake that is worth the wait.
The trailer gives a glimpse into the life of an unemployed Arjun, who has to ask his wife for money to buy a birthday gift for his son. On her refusal, he started robbing her purse. Her only quest in life is to make her child happy and proud of her. We are also treated to some flashbacks where he is seen creating a stampede on the cricket field. A star cricketer, his first love was taken away from him, and now when he decides to get it back, his family threatens to leave him.
It is heartening to see Shahid Kapoor playing the role of a father on screen, who struggles to get respect in his son’s eyes. Apart from the onscreen bond, Shahid and Pankaj Kapur’s lovely real-life relationship is noteworthy. It seems that Mrunal Thakur plays the hero’s wife, who supports her, stays away from her and romances with her. While Shahid has somehow managed to move backwards and look like a college-goer in the flashback sequences, he is yet to come out of Kabir Singh mode by acting out aggression and pain.
Jersey looks like the perfect Bollywood movie with family drama, romance, sports and action in it.
The original sports drama directed by Gowtham Tinnanuri won awards in the Best Telugu Film and Best Editing categories at the 67th National Film Awards in 2019.
Earlier during an Instagram live, Shahid Kapoor said that he was “unhappy” with the way his career was shaping up, before seeing success with Kabir Singh in 2019. “I had seen Jersey before Kabir Singh. The time I saw it, I was sad. I used to think where will my career go, what will I do next. So, I can relate to the story of Jersey, which is about success of late. It is about a man who finds pride at a time when people retire,” said the actor.
He also praised Nani, saying that the Telugu actor was so good at the role that he made her “cry four-five times”. Shahid also revealed that many people dissuaded him from doing the Jersey remake, saying he should refrain from playing his age after starring as a college boy in Kabir Singh.
Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey will release on December 31.
