Daryl Mitchell has replaced Devon Conway in New Zealand’s Test squad for the upcoming tour of India. Conway was ruled out of the tour earlier and was knocked out of the ICC T20 World Cup final with a broken arm in the Black Caps semi-final win over England on Wednesday. Head coach Gary Stead said Conway will return home with the T20I squad next week after a three-match series in India, while Mitchell will remain in place for the two-Test series starting later this month.
“It is a shame for Devon to miss the first series of the new World Test Championship cycle, but it also provides an opportunity for someone else,” Stead told New Zealand Cricket (NZC).
“Daryl’s versatility means that he can cover a lot of batting positions and certainly he has got a lot of confidence at the moment. He has proved that he can perform in Test cricket and I know he is excited to be back in the Test group.”
The Kiwis will arrive in India on Monday to begin the tour with three T20 Internationals, the first of which will be held in Jaipur on November 17, followed by Ranchi on 19 and Kolkata on 21.
The two-Test series will start in Kanpur from November 25 and the second Test will be held in Mumbai from December 3.
