Dhoom 2 turns 15: How Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai gave Bollywood the smartest, sexiest crooks

One can imagine Hrithik Roshan as a desirable chef, or even a snooty kid. But did we ever expect to see her play the role of the Queen of England, an old man or, for that matter, a sculpture (now almost Freudian)? As Hrithik Roshan Playing Aryan Singh aka Mr A in Dhoom 2, ‘Master of Disguise’ emerged as the coolest conman of Hindi films.

Dhoom 2 is completing 15 years of its release today. You may feel old but Hrithik continues to give everyone a run for their money. In this action-thriller, he won the hearts of the audience with his uber cool thief as he stole dough from right under the nose of a cop (played by Abhishek Bachchan).

The Dhoom franchise debuted in 2004 with Abhishek as the goofy assistant to the lead man ACP Jai Dixit and Uday Chopra. The plot revolves around these two stalking thieves who commit a big robbery. She followed John Abraham in the first film, and traveled around the world on Hrithik Roshan’s Khushboo in the second film. While John played the ‘antagonist’ in the true sense of the word, Hrithik was an anti-hero rather than an all-black villain.

Hrithik shared in an Instagram post last year That his disguise and all the looks in the film were inspired by Bruce Willis, Pierce Brosnan and Amitabh Bachchan. Be it the gray shades he sported in the movie, his chiseled body, the almost impossible heist or his arc in the movie, we loved this character for being a villain. And even casting a female thief on par with Hrithik’s vicious thief was not an easy task. But then, Yash Raj Films got the best – Aishwarya Rai.

Dhoom 2 also gave Aishwarya an image makeover. Until then, we had seen her play the girl-next-door in complex roles or flaunting grandeur, as in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s collections in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. Dhoom 2 revealed her sexy side.

Director Sanjay Gadhvi told IANS, “This geometry of Hrithik and Aishwarya was an important milestone in the film and I think in the world of mainstream entertainment in India. It was a good and solid paring that has stood the test of time. It has come true.”

Choreographer Shiamak Davar said that he has incorporated a “very strong Bollywood dance” in the title track of Dhoom 2. “All of a sudden, we had to put in a little jazz and contemporary.
